Uday Prasad’s career proves a powerful truth: practical skills and courage matter more than an academic degree. By continually reinventing himself, he built an extraordinary career not in a classroom, but through hands-on ability. With over 45 years of professional experience, Uday has lived two demanding and highly respected careers. His journey began at sea. Selected through a national-level competitive process, he trained at India’s prestigious Training Ship Rajendra in Mumbai and went on to spend nearly 18 years in the Merchant Navy. Rising through the ranks and earning a Master’s qualification in Nautical Sciences, he navigated some of the world’s most challenging oceans. Life at sea taught him discipline, accountability, resilience, and decision-making under pressure—qualities that would later define his second career. At the age of 37, Uday made a bold and unconventional decision: he stepped away from a secure and respected maritime career and entered the world of information technology. With no formal computer science degree, he relied on self-learning, vocational skill-building, and sheer determination. He taught himself programming and earned a place at IBM Global Services as a Senior Software Engineer, specializing in Mainframe technology. The transition was anything but easy. Early in his IT career, he was posted to a high-pressure customer support role in New York, at a time when he was the sole provider for his family. The challenge was acute—but it forged a unique professional strength: the discipline of a sea captain combined with the precision of a mainframe engineer. Over the years, Uday steadily progressed through the IT ranks—from developer to delivery leadership—managing large teams and critical systems for Fortune 500 companies across banking, insurance, and telecommunications. The mainframe career he built proved to be just as lucrative, challenging, and intellectually demanding as life at sea—fulfilling his dream of a second profession that matched the stature of his first. Today, Uday works as a consultant, trainer, and mentor, dedicated to passing his hard-earned knowledge to the next generation. With a long trail of followers both in real life and on social media, he teaches core mainframe skills such as COBOL, CICS, JCL, and Db2. His impact is tangible: he has changed the lives and careers of over 200 students now working in different capacities across India. Uday strongly believes that vocational expertise, aligned with industry demand, is more powerful than a theoretical degree alone.
