The Unclipped Wings
Author: Viswanadhan Mangatt
This novel is based on the travails of Sankar Madom, one among the Tamil Brahmin Comminity in Kodungallur. The intruder Suppamani, appeared as the in-law, turned aggressive and killed his wife Sooya, out of greed, ascribed to an accidental fire in the kitchen. But asurya's yonger sister Gayathri, identified the death as a culpable murder and internationally carried out by Suppamani. She took revenge and retaliated by killing Suppamani. She went on hiding and in the process located Sekhar, the brother of her best friend Chinnammu. They have cohabited in a tiny room near Dr. Anne Besant Road in Bombay for quite some time and have since moved to Pune. They both enjoyed that secluded life. As time went on, Gayathri realised that Sekhar Sekhar was a person of integrity and sincerity, who would never betray her in life, which may spoil his prospects, which in turn entail forgetting the needs of his elderly parents. She leaves him, heartbroken and alone to disappear. After several years the police apprehended her and after lengthy court proceedings, she received a fourteen- year life sentence. At the end of the prison life Sekhar comes to the gate of Yerawada Women's Prison to gladly receive Gayathri. She was also expecting him and wished to remain with him for the rest of her life as a true companion, to wipe out her tears. Emerging to the outside, unfamiliar landscape of the prison she felt disoriented. Sekhar moved ahead and patted her graying hair and held her slender body in his arms. Those precious moments were a gift of time, which kept in its fold all along, to present only for them.
