Dr. Gobinda Palit [B.A. (Honours), M.A., B.Ed., Ph.D.] was born and raised in Changlang, a picturesque region in Arunachal Pradesh, India. As the son of a government employee who served in the Arunachal Pradesh (CPWD/APPWD) and was posted in Changlang since 1967 during the NEFA period, Dr. Palit’s entire educational journey and socio-cultural development have been deeply rooted in the unique landscape and rich tribal heritage specifically in Changlang of Arunachal Pradesh and in North East India in general. With strong moral encouragement and academic guidance from his teachers and peers, along with generous financial support from his parents, he pursued his academic path with dedication. He earned his B.A. (Honours) and M.A. in Geography, as well as a B.Ed., followed by a Ph.D. from Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar. Dr. Palit has undertaken several field-based research projects under prestigious institutions such as WWF-India and the ICSSR-affiliated Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development (OKDISCD), Guwahati. He also volunteered in a field-based survey conducted by the International Working Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA). In addition to his academic and research engagements, during his postgraduate studies, he worked as a news correspondent for the English daily The North East Times, under the esteemed editorship of Prof. Hiren Gohain. He has actively participated in numerous national and international seminars, conferences, and workshops, presenting scholarly papers on a wide range of geo-environmental themes. His academic contributions include the publication of several research papers in reputed national and international journals, as well as chapters in edited volumes. With over a decade of experience in academia, Dr. Palit has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students across various domains of Geography and Disaster Management. He previously served as the Head of the Department of Geography at Himalayan University, and is currently serving as an Associate Professor of Geography at the same institution in Itanagar. Over the years, he has taught thousands of students from various parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, Sikkim and Meghalaya at different colleges and universities. Many of his former students are now serving in prestigious roles throughout the region — as administrators, police officers, advocates, academicians, researchers, teachers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and even as progressive cultivators. For a teacher from a humble background, it is a matter of immense pride and fulfilment to see his students contributing meaningfully to society and holding responsible positions across Northeast India. His primary academic and research interests include geo-environmental geography, particularly in the context of mountain ecosystems and biodiversity, indigenous knowledge systems, disaster management, human and socio-cultural geography, biogeography, and recreation, tourism, and travel geography. Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Palit, being a naturalist, is passionate about nature conservation and exploration, with hobbies that reflect his zest for life and the environment.
